Los reyes de la baraja

Los reyes de la baraja (The Kings in the Deck of Cards) arranged by Federico García Lorca (1898-1936).

Lorca´s most important activity throughout his life, outside of literature, was music, which mainly revolved around traditional folk songs from across Spain – a passion he shared with his friend Manuel de Falla. Throughout his life, he regularly sang and played Spanish folk songs, developing his own accompaniments on the piano. He made a number of sound recordings under the title Colección de canciones antiguas españolas with his singer friend Encarnación López "La Argentinita", which were later transcribed from the recording and published. This arrangement was made by our guitarist Francisco Javier Jáuregui for our trio.

We recorded this song, along with others from the same collection, for our CD Secretos quiero descubrir, engineered by Árni Möller.

Los reyes de la baraja

Si tu madre quiere un rey,

la baraja tiene cuatro:

rey de oros, rey de copas,

rey de espadas, rey de bastos.

Corre que te pillo,

corre que te agarro,

mira que te lleno

la cara de barro.

Del olivo me retiro,

del esparto yo me aparto,

del sarmiento me arrepiento

de haberte querido tanto.

The Kings in the Pack of Cards

If your mother wants a king,

the pack of cards has four:

king of diamonds, king of hearts,

king of spades, king of clubs.

Run or I’ll catch you, run or I’ll grab you,

look out or I’ll cover your face with mud.

The olive tree I refuse,

The rough grass I avoid

The vine shoot I regret…

having loved you so much.

Run or I’ll catch you, etc.

Kóngarnir í spilastokknum

Ef mamma þín vill kóng,

þá eru fjórir í spilastokknum:

hjartakóngur, spaðakóngur,

tígulkóngur, laufakóngur.

Hlauptu, ég næ þér,

hlauptu, ég gríp í þig,

sjáðu, ég maka andlitið á þér

út í leðju.

Ég fer frá ólívutrénu,

ég yfirgef grasið og vínviðinn,

ég sé eftir því

að hafa elskað þig svona heitt.
